You’ve graduated college, passed your tests, and landed your first teaching job. You’re probably terrified about a million things, but I’m here to help you build strong relationships with the teachers you will need to collaborate and cooperate with to ensure the success of your students. Here’s a handy guide to some of the teachers you’ve met and how to work with them.

1. 24/7 Theresa has had all her lessons aligned with the Common Core State Standards since the day your state adopted them. She meets the janitor at the front door as he’s unlocking the school, and she’s usually there when he’s closing it up at night. She’s advisor to three clubs, and she’s on every committee. Every lesson she plans is effective and engaging, and she’s won Favorite Teacher for 16 years in a row. She has boundless energy, an indomitable spirit, and an infectious positive attitude.

24/7 T can intimidate any new teacher and make her feel like a slacker. Learn to tap into her expertise. Observe her classes. Listen when her students talk about her, and begin to adapt some of her strategies and methods in your own classroom. You don’t have to be 24/7 T, but you can learn a great deal from her.

2. Donny Downer is the teacher who doesn’t believe today’s kids can achieve at the same level as their earlier counterparts.
