Cathy StephensQ: I’m graduating in December. Will I be able to find a full-time teaching job, or will I have to substitute for the rest of this school year?

A: It’s likely that you will substitute teach, but I would encourage you to see it as the opportunity that it is. I chose to sub for a year after I graduated, and I still think it was the best decision of my teaching career. I added dozens of ideas from great teachers to my arsenal, forged solid relationships in several districts that helped me narrow down where I really wanted to teach, and learned to handle any situation that was thrown my way. I still share some of those stories with my current students because they are that good! Read my tips on “Substitute Your Way to a Real Job” for some pointers as you jump into your new adventure.
