Cathy StephensQ: I’m having trouble creating my elevator speech for why someone should hire me as a teacher. Help!

A: An elevator speech, in my opinion, is not necessary for teachers. Should you be prepared to talk about your passion for teaching, what you can do for kids in the classroom, and why you chose teaching as a profession? Absolutely, and it should compel the listener to want to know more, leading her to schedule an interview. But a canned speech isn’t as appropriate for teachers as it is for other professions. Be prepared with numerous examples, get ready to show your passion, and when the opportunity arises, you’ll do fine. This is most likely going to be at an educator job fair, so you would need to be prepared for more than a canned speech anyway.

Q: I’m going to a job fair. How can I stand out from the other candidates?
